Something Else!!!!, recorded across three sessions in early 1958 and released that September on Contemporary, is Ornette Coleman's debut as a leader, produced by Lester Koenig after a bebop bassist introduced the two. Coleman, then working as an elevator operator in Los Angeles, brought in trumpeter Don Cherry, pianist Walter Norris, bassist Don Payne and drummer Billy Higgins for nine original compositions that pushed against hard bop convention, an early signal of Coleman's far more radical direction to come.
