Music Inc., recorded November 11, 1970, was the debut release on Strata-East Records, the label trumpeter Charles Tolliver and pianist Stanley Cowell founded to control their own material outside the major-label system. Their working quartet, with bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Jimmy Hopps, expanded here into full big-band scale, adding saxophonists Jimmy Heath and Clifford Jordan, baritone player Howard Johnson and a stacked brass section across six extended compositions. AllMusic's Jason Ankeny later called it "the apotheosis of trumpeter Charles Tolliver's singular creative vision," a rare case of a big band arrangement never crowding out its soloists' freedom.
