Recorded live over two nights at London's Total Refreshment Centre in October 2017, Where We Come From captures a one-off meeting between Chicago's Makaya McCraven and a set of London's sharpest young improvisers — Nubya Garcia, Theon Cross, Joe Armon-Jones and Kamaal Williams among them, with Soweto Kinch on sax and voice. McCraven took the raw tapes home afterward and reworked them into the mixtape proper, the same beat-splicing approach that's defined his whole International Anthem run. The result sits somewhere between a live jazz document and a hip-hop record, tuba and Rhodes piano threaded through breakbeats. Two scenes meeting in one room, caught on tape.
