Jackson Mathod's January 2025 EP for Ameritz Music grew out of Ronnie Scott's shows and studio sessions in Hither Green, opener “Watermelon Man” reworked from an improvisation pianist Allesandro Ilona played live after a monitor malfunction threw up an unexpected sound. “Slum,” written back in 2017-18 and workshopped at the Limehouse warehouse venue Unit 31, builds slowly rather than stating its idea upfront; “Red Pistachio” draws on Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah's StretchMusic for its approach. Mathod cites seeing Herbie Hancock live as a formative influence, and this five-track set leans harder into group improvisation than his earlier, more melody-first work.
