Fred Locks, born Stafford Elliot, took his stage name from the dreadlocks he grew living on the beach at Harbour View. "Black Star Liner," written with Owen Goode during his turn to Rastafarianism, takes its title from Marcus Garvey's repatriation shipping line and became a roots reggae anthem after its 1975 single release. This 1976 debut album, cut for the Vulcan label, has stayed popular with roots audiences ever since.
