Finn Rees built his debut around a deliberate pivot — away from the groove-first jazz he’d been playing toward something more compositional, piano and arrangement doing the work rhythm section usually does. Recorded at Rolling Stock in Collingwood with engineer Henry Jenkins working a minimal, vintage mic setup for a live feel, the record moves in three stages: hopeful opening tracks like ‘Looking Up,’ a cinematic, Brazilian-tinted middle section, then a quieter, more intimate close built around piano and strings. Rees cites Alice Coltrane, Herbie Hancock and Arthur Verocai as reference points, with Allysha Joy featuring on vocals alongside harpist Siwei Wong and trumpeter Audrey Powne.
