Mama's Gun, released November 2000 on Motown, is Erykah Badu's second album, recorded from May 1999 at Electric Lady Studios with the Soulquarians circle, including Questlove, Pino Palladino and James Poyser. More autobiographical than her debut, it works through motherhood, her split from André 3000, and street-level social commentary over live jazz, funk and soul arrangements. Lead single "Bag Lady" became her first top-ten pop hit, and the album went platinum within a month.
