Yaya Bey's third album, released on Big Dada in 2022, moves across soul, jazz, reggae, afrobeat and hip-hop over eighteen tracks — mostly self-written and self-produced, with Aja Grant of Phony Ppl co-producing and DJ Nativesun contributing throughout. Bey has called the record “my thesis,” working through misogynoir, generational trauma and self-love from a specifically Black woman's vantage point; “keisha” and “big daddy ya” carry the clearest statements of it. Raised in Jamaica, Queens around her father's studio work before relocating to Washington, D.C., Bey brings a visual artist's instincts to a record built more on mood shifts than tidy genre lines.
