Pharoah Sanders Quintet, recorded September 1964 at engineer Jerry Newman's New York loft and released the following year on ESP-Disk', pairs Sanders's tenor sax with trumpeter Stan Foster, pianist Jane Getz, bassist William Bennett and drummer Marvin Pattillo across two extended tracks, "Seven by Seven" and "Bethera." The mismatch between Sanders's emerging avant-garde style and his more straight-ahead sidemen makes this an early, transitional document, recorded not long before the record reportedly caught John Coltrane's attention and led to Sanders joining his group in September 1965, just as his own sound was beginning to take shape.
