Afro Trane, released May 2022, is Nat Birchall's third all-solo album and his most direct tribute to John Coltrane, mixing original compositions with Coltrane pieces including "Acknowledgement (A Love Supreme Pt 1)" and "India." Across six tracks, Birchall leans into the more Afrocentric side of Coltrane's later music, a thread he's pursued across several records under his own name, playing every instrument himself as he has throughout his solo output. The programme is deliberately balanced between homage and original writing, letting his own voice sit alongside the pieces that shaped it rather than simply covering them.
