Mulatu Of Ethiopia, originally recorded in 1972 and reissued by Strut in 2017, documents Mulatu Astatke's Ethio-jazz sound in full for the first time, cut in a downtown Manhattan studio with producer Gil Snapper after Astatke's studies at Berklee. Astatke has recalled the sessions taking several weeks of rehearsal to find the right feeling, as the band worked to fuse Ethiopian, Puerto Rican and American influences into a genuinely hybrid sound. Tracks like "Kulunmanqueleshi" and "Dewel" became fixtures of his live sets for decades afterward, and the Ethio-Latin "Chifara" shows the record's reach.
