Black Woman And Child, recorded when Sizzla was 21 and produced by Bobby "Digital" Dixon, arrived in 1997 as only his second album but is widely considered his strongest. It landed as reggae was leaning heavily digital, and Dixon's production instead folded in real instrumentation and revived classic Studio One riddims, sampling The Abyssinians and The Soul Vendors among others. Lyrically the record works through Bobo Ashanti teachings, Black nationalism, repatriation and Pan-Africanism, delivered with Sizzla's dense, urgent vocal style. It's widely credited with helping spark a wave of conscious dancehall that followed. This edition is a 2024 remaster.
