Nick Wisdom and AstroLogical’s fourth Bastard Jazz release takes on love from every unglamorous angle — infatuation mistaken for the real thing, missing an ex, being stuck in two places in a relationship at once. Rather than staying purely behind the boards as usual, the duo step up as vocalists and songwriters themselves on parts of this one, while still finding room for an unlikely guest list: Redman, Shafiq Husayn, Ivan Ave, Abstract Rude, T3 and Frank Nitt all turn up across eleven tracks. Musically it swings between Rhodes-driven boom bap and early-’80s digital funk, the duo’s clean, musical production sensibility holding the whole thing together despite the guest-list sprawl.
