MØ’s debut turned a background in Danish hardcore-punk band MOR into something else entirely — twelve tracks of electropop built with regular collaborator Ronni Vindahl and Diplo, who co-produced ‘XXX 88’ and the Aaliyah-interpolating ‘Walk This Way.’ Released via Chess Club and RCA in 2014, it landed at a moment when Scandinavian pop was reshaping the mainstream, MØ’s rougher, more restless edges setting her apart from the polish around her. Reviewers at the time settled on generally favourable rather than rapturous, but the record’s influence outlasted its initial reception — a template for the noisier, DIY-adjacent pop that followed.
