Madvillainy, released March 2004 on Stones Throw, is the one album MF DOOM and producer Madlib made together as Madvillain, twenty-two tracks built from Madlib's dense, off-kilter sampling and DOOM's dense, off-kilter rhyme schemes. Both artists were still largely underground names when the first single, "America's Most Blunted," started building buzz ahead of release. Rather than smoothing either artist's eccentricities into something more commercial, the record leans into them, turning the conventions of early-2000s rap production upside down while staying rooted in hip-hop's own tradition. It has since become one of the most widely cited touchstones of underground hip-hop production.
