Sam Shepherd spent five years on this 2015 debut as Floating Points, working around a neuroscience PhD and DJ dates, and it shows in the record's patience — long, three-part compositions like “Silhouettes” building slowly toward release rather than hitting immediately. Rahel Debebe-Dessalegne and Layla Rutherford's vocals sit inside a band arrangement of strings, bass and guitar, closer to Shepherd's chorister background than his club records. He even built his own harmonograph, tracing fibre-optic light patterns from the music, for the artwork — an ambitious record that draws on everything he'd done up to that point rather than picking one lane.
