Eric Lau’s Examples is exactly what it sounds like — an almost overwhelming survey of a producer’s range, 28 tracks moving through hip-hop, soul, jazz, funk and Brazilian rhythm with barely a pause between styles. Lau’s built a reputation as a producer’s producer, name-checked by Gilles Peterson, 9th Wonder and members of A Tribe Called Quest and The Roots, and this collection reads like the résumé behind that reputation — a working sketchbook rather than a tightly sequenced album. Released on First Word in 2017, it sits alongside his other production work for Kaidi Tatham, Oddisee and Yussef Kamaal.
